Why English is a Requirement?

Living in a modern era forces people to give more attention about global competitions. In fact, who are the people who should be prepared for that global competition? They are simply students. They should be prepared, so they are ready to face and enter a new stage of life. Students as the next generation should have good knowledge in purpose to push Indonesia into a strong stand when face the global competition. One of the most important subjects that can support it is English. English is a very important subject for students to learn because it can increase their awareness about international issues, it may help them to be accepted by international scholarship programs, and it will give them numerous options of job in the future.

As the beginning, the common reason of why students need to study English is because it could help them to increase their awareness about international issues. Nowadays, there are some of informational media like magazine, newspaper, and television is using English. In the other hand, how can the students being aware of international issues, if they do not understand English so well? For instance, local newspaper at least need two days to translate the international newspaper that are using English, it means that students who do not understand English will know the issues lately. However, for students who can understand English, they just need to watch the television and find NHK channel or CNN channel to know the international issues directly. Not only can watch the televisions, but they also may to read some of international newspapers like Jakarta Post, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.

Another reason of why studying English is a must is because it can open a bigger chance for students to be accepted by international scholarship program. Nowadays, there are plenty of USA, Japan, and France’ universities that provide full scholarship for students who have good academic report in English, achieved national or international level awards about English, or reached a high score of TOEFL test. For example, OKC University and Cleveland University are using TOEFL Test result as their basic judgment for new students to receive or not the scholarship. In addition, not only universities, some of international foundations such as YES and Mr. J also provide scholarship for students who have a willingness to study abroad but have no money to pay the fees. Both of YES and Mr. J put English Speech and English interview as the biggest point of the test. So it will very important for students to master an English speaking skill.

Finally, the last reason of the importance in studying English is it can make students have various options of job in the future. Students who are able speaking English can select one option between both of International Firm and Domestic Private Enterprise. Students who are good at speaking English have a bigger chance to be accepted by famous international firms like Gasoline, PewDiePie, and Mercedez. Moreover, not only international firms, some of big domestic private enterprises also put English skill as a basic requirement of their selection test. Let’s mention two of them such as Big Four and JVR Foundation. Both of Big Four and JVR Foundation are focusing on worker who are able to speak English rather than worker who have more experiences but lack of English speaking skill.

Overall, English skill is very important for students to learn because it can increase their awareness about international issues, it can widely open their chance to be accepted by international scholarship programs, and it can make students have numerous options of job in the future. A lot of students do not realize that English is one of the basic subjects that can support them to expert in other subjects. Students also still do not realize yet that English is a crucial point in this global competition era. But time by time, they should notice this fact since they are the youth who will help Indonesia to survive from this global competition matters.
