There are
three importance of communication skills for career success, which are: communication
influences how we think about
our-self and others; communication influences the way we learn; and communication skills
are demanded by business and industry. First, communication
definitely make us think about concept we want to deliver and while
we are communicating we try to understand others’ messages and priorities. It
can happen when someone told us that we are not speak clearly and we need an
improvement in grammar, it may be
discouraging.
So that is why, it is important to have a good communication skills as
professionals. Second, communication really influence how we learn something.
When we are not good enough in speaking then we are motivated to practice. Having a good communication skill is a symbol that we have effort,
persistence, and self-correction. Third, business and
industry demand person with a good communication skill. There is a
fact that top level managers mostly hire a consultant to make their
communication skills improve. Moreover, according
to the National Association of Colleges and
Employers,
communication skills is the top rank of personal skills employers seek. So,
that is all the three importance of communication skills to support our career
growth.
I see as general that the
explosion of technology is likely to bring negative impacts toward oral and
written communication. It is because people today do not need to meet face to face
to open the conversation. According to Sherry Turkle, an author and professor
at MIT, he says that now only few people are able to speak effective (also
efficient) and have good social skills to carry out a conversation. It is
because we prefer to do written communication via social media rather than meet
face to face. But that does not mean, it will impact positively to written
communication, since most of conversations made through social media does not
reflect an effective and efficient communication. However for me, it depends on the person itself. If we want to educate our-self then we can utilize technology to learn about communication skills in less expensive way. Even Elizabeth
Smith who has been a scientific and engineering writer since 2004 says that
people can learn how to speak and communicate in a good manner by using advance technology. I interpret it as YouTube in which we can study to speak effectively,
efficiently, to the point, etc. Even nowadays, the right e-mail order is provided
in the internet. So if we want to send an e-mail to our lecturers, we can find the
example in the internet then make it by our own.
